Bluewater Campground: A Scenic and Clean Retreat in Prewitt, NM

According to campers on TheDyrt.com, there is no coverage for AT&T, no coverage for T-Mobile, and some coverage for Verizon. At first we thought we were the only ones here. The bathrooms were closed and locked.

Last night something was bugging the dogs so I looked outside to see a herd of wild horses grazing next to our camper! There are lots of good hiking trails. The water is still on here and the dump stations are open if needed. Bluewater Lake State Park campground has 149 campsites and is located next to Bluewater Lake on the north flank of the Zuni Mountains in the Las Tusas Basin. The Bluewater and Pinon Cliffs loops are closer to the water and Canyonside loop is just a short walk to the lakeshore.

Lavaland RV Park

  • Although they were closed for the season there are plenty of restrooms and it has 2 dump stations near the entrance/exit.
  • Please bring proof of your reservation with you to your campsite.
  • So strong they collapsed my tent on top of me.
  • Jay Cooke State Park offers one of the best places for bikers, backpackers, horseback riders and skiers to hook up with the Willard Munger State Trail.

Gallo campground is also in the area – about 75 miles to the north. And Canyon De Chelly is a great place to visit and camp if heading over to Northern Arizona. Wildlife Precautions – Store food in bear-proof containers and keep your campsite clean to avoid attracting bears and other wildlife. Boating – The lake has a boat ramp, and boating is a popular activity. Motorized and non-motorized boats are allowed, but there may be rules about boat inspections and permits necessary to prevent the spread of invasive aquatic species.

  • Views of lake and surrounding juniper covered mesas was good.
  • This serene lake, located 25 miles west of Grants, is set in a pinon-juniper landscape with views towards the 3,000 acres of wilderness on the north flank of the Zuni Mountains.
  • Didn’t care for the ‘outhouse’ (not the name they were called).
  • There aren’t many electric sites if that’s important to you and some say they’re no level.
  • It’s important to prepare for changing weather conditions by bringing appropriate clothing and gear.

So strong they collapsed my tent on top of me. It might have been where I was (pad 44),  They were still strong in the morning, but I noticed they were less/non existant at the campsites near the main entrance. People next to us did not but set up camp anyways.

Bluewater Lake State Park Overview

The rates are dirt cheap, but the park is worth many times more. I came in without a reservation and found a huge pull-through campsite on the hill, with a clear view of the lake (it is indeed blue). There was a deep and broad terrace for picnic table and tent, and some pines for shade. It was a little windy when I visited, but not uncomfortably so. It was dark and quiet at night, and I slept well. Bluewater Lake is located within Bluewater Lake State Park in the Zuni Mountains of New Mexico, approximately 30 miles west of Grants.

Camping Facilities

The hook up sites over looked the water (paved pad, pavilion, fire ring, 30&50 amp electric) bathrooms, showers, dump station.Boat ramp. Nice Pike and Muskie for the anglers. I recommend following the trail at the north end of the campground for a nice view of the dam (it was a 10 to 15 minute hike for me, narrow but level). The lake is also open for boating and fishing, with a launch ramp near the campground. Found this campsite heading west on I-40 on a memorial day weekend road trip last minute. Had 40 designated campsites with about 1/2 reservable online and 1/2 first come first serve.

Nice for a November site

The park can be accessed via State Highway 612, and it offers a serene getaway for visitors looking to enjoy outdoor activities such as camping, hiking, fishing, and boating. I did not have a site reservation, buit there were lots of vacent pads available. Only drawback was the all night  incessant  winds. They were strong, gusty and loud.
